Artist Statement

Throughout the two years of taking film photography at this school, I have found I like photography because of its unique ability to pause reality and allow the artist to make something out of it. This semester I have taken photos over a variety of things and never had a consistent concentration, however I have gotten to explore different subjects. It is very hard to decide, but I would say construction is my favorite. This is due to when people first see construction, they think it is distraction and see it as a disturbance, but they are driving by it and gazing from afar. With some of my prints, I went up close and got a more appreciate interpretation of construction sites and so did others through my photography. This year I didn’t not experiment a lot with prints and in the dark room because I wanted to get a good grasp on the knowledge and the nature behind the camera. One thing I did try was painting with light. All of the shots didn’t turn out as planned, but when I worked on it in the dark room with overlapping the negatives, it turned out to be great print and a positive turn around for my photo progress this semester. I wish I would have tried more techniques and processes on my prints.

I don’t believe my artwork varies from other artists based upon how the majority of artists are simply shooting objects they like and expressing themselves; the only differences are our interests and our stories. When other people view my photography, they say phrases like: “neat,” “cute,” “so cool,” “you’re good,” and “that’s artsy.” I feel my photography doesn’t have an overbearing influence on my viewers, but it is compelling enough for them to stop and discover they might have not have truly seen before. My  goals and aspirations as photographer, as of right now, is to develop and produce more photographs with a more meaningful impact and take pictures of more extraordinary objects, so basically an increase in my creativity. The idea that inspires to take the shots I take is whenever I see something captivating, I’m pulled in to capture that scene, show and hopefully gain that same feeling from my viewers.
